One of the biggest things I've noticed after photographing families is how much pressure parents can put on themselves during a session.
They want the kids to sit still. They want everyone looking at the camera. They want genuine smiles, clean clothes, a spotless home, and everyone to cooperate for the entire session.
I understand it. You’re investing in photographs that you’ll have for years, and of course you want them to turn out beautifully.
But here's the thing: your family doesn't need to perform for my camera.
My Why
I don't want your family to spend your session trying to create a version of yourselves that doesn't actually exist.
I want to photograph your family as you are. The way your little one reaches for you. The way they run around the room. The way you laugh when they're being a little wild. The way they crawl into your lap when they need a break.
Those things are part of your family too.
Imperfection Tells the Story
Your home doesn't have to be spotless. Your kids don't have to be perfectly behaved. Everyone doesn't need to be smiling at the camera.
Sometimes the toy you forgot to put away ends up in the background. Sometimes someone gets upset. Sometimes we take a break because your little one has simply had enough.
And that's okay.
Those little imperfections are part of what makes your photographs yours. They show what this season of your life actually looked like, rather than creating a perfectly polished version of it.
Kids Don't Need to Perform
I don't expect your kids to sit still and smile whenever I lift my camera.
They can explore. They can run. They can be silly. They can hide behind you. They can ask a million questions. They can take a few minutes to warm up.
I'll give them space to be themselves, and I'll work around what they're giving me.
Sometimes the best images happen when they're not looking at the camera at all.
Kids and Parents Need Space Sometimes
Sometimes your little one needs a few minutes to warm up, explore, or simply do their own thing. The same applies to parents.
Sometimes parents need a reminder that it's okay if everything isn't going exactly as planned. You don't need to worry about whether your child is sitting still, smiling, or looking at the camera. Give them space to be themselves, and I'll work with what they're giving me.
Whether we're photographing your family in your home or outdoors, I want you to feel like you can relax and let the moments happen naturally. I'll step in when you need a little direction, but I also know when to step back and let you be together.
Trust me, we will still capture beautiful images.
These Moments Are Worth Documenting
Family photos aren't only about the big milestones.
They're about the everyday things you'll eventually miss without realizing it.
The way your child fits into your arms right now. Their little hands. Their favourite stuffed animal. The way they run through your house. The messy kitchen. The bedtime cuddles. The way they look at you.
These are the things that change before we realize they're changing.
That's why I believe these moments are worth documenting, exactly as they are.
What I Hope You Remember
When you look back at your photographs years from now, I don't want you to remember whether everyone behaved perfectly.
I want you to remember what this season felt like.
I want you to remember how small they were, how they laughed, how they held your hand, and how it felt to have everyone together in that moment.
You don't need perfectly behaved kids.
You don't need a spotless home.
You don't need everyone smiling at the camera.
You just need to show up as yourselves.
I'll take care of the rest.
